Is It Concerning?

This is a question I’ve been using a lot more lately. It gives me an idea of how much of a mental weight their pain has on them.

Someone can come in with sharp knee pain and say “Nah, I’m not too concerned I know it’ll go away soon” while another may have a dull ache in their bicep and think they might need an amputation!…

It can help us calibrate the level of worry our patient has. With that we can deliver even better care by not minimizing their pain or instilling fear.
